Our summers also bring out venomous creatures of various sorts. Bees and wasps are always great sport for the more spirited pets to see as fun little creatures to bat, snap, or lunge at. Our four-legged friends don’t always weigh the consequences of the sting on the muzzle or paw. Try to convince your pet to disregard the desire to chase down these various stinging insects-sometimes a little spray with the garden hose does the trick. In this area, venomous snakes, such as copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can inflict potentially life-threatening bites. By limiting the amount of woodpiles or rock piles (places where these snakes like to seek refuge), that your pet could have access to, you can reduce the potential for interaction with these slithery denizens. If you do notice your pet with any sudden swelling to the face, neck, paws, or legs, this may be an indication of some kind of venomous bite/sting and you should seek veterinary assistance for your pet as soon as possible. Pets in Western North Carolina deserve to enjoy a full life in the good ‘ol summertime, just as their loving owners do. Take the extra measures this summer to make it a healthy one for your four-legged friend.
